Ncuti Gatwa's 14th Doctor has been confirmed as gay, which promises a queer future for Doctor Who, along with Yasmin Finney's trans companion Rose. By Jordan Robledo. This Doctor Who veteran has opened up about his hopes for the Time Lord in the upcoming season. Back in February, it was confirmed that the long-running series would return for its highly anticipated second season — aka series 15 — on 12 April.

From the get-go, Gatwa’s 15th Doctor has proven that he is not shying away from his LGBTQ+ identity as a genderfluid, queer Time Lord. We get our first hint during the episode when The Doctor regales Ruby with a story about having a “hot summer” with Harry Houdini. Iconic Doctor Who director Waris Hussein has expressed his desire to see the Doctor's queerness explored more within the series. Hussein is of course best known for directing the first ever Doctor Who serial in , An Unearthly Child, going on to direct much of the fourth serial, Marco Polo, too. Gatwa is also the first openly queer lead for Doctor Who, and Hussein reflected on how the sci-fi series should depict the Fifteenth Doctor's sexuality.

Throughout its run, the Doctor Who series has planted seeds that the Time Lord may be queer. However, it wasn’t explicitly confirmed last season during episode six, titled Rouge. For Doctor Who head writer Russell T Davies , watching the series in the mids paralleled his feelings about his own sexuality. The show has also long had a large LGBT fanbase, with numerous fan groups and even drag shows celebrating the series. With its latest episode, however, the show has given LGBT fans something they have never had before: Rogue played by Jonathan Groff , a figure who companion show Doctor Who: Unleashed called "the Doctor's new-found love interest.

It's literally been a week since the Doctor confirmed his gender-fluid, non-binary identity by describing himself as "a man, a woman, both, and neither." And far less time than that has passed. The new era of the BBC sci-fi series kicked off last month , with Ncuti Gatwa fully stepping into the shoes of the 15th Doctor. As well as Yaz, queer characters in the show have included the lesbian Victorian married couple Jenny Flint and Madame Vastra Catrin Stewart and Neve McIntosh , and pansexual Torchwood agent Jack Harkness John Barrowman.
